The development of AIDS policy in the years 1981-1991 was driven by complex social and medical issues. Intense advocacy lead to development of unique protections for confidentiality, discreet federal,, groundbreaking workplace protections and the institutionalization of informal social support networks as the locus of care.

The World AIDS Day 2008 program explores this phenomenon. Using an interdisciplinary approach, the humanities and arts are brought into dialogue with sociomedical sciences.

The World AIDS Day 2008 program is the first in a series of activities that uses the lessons of the past to craft a plan for the future of the HIV epidemic in the United States.
